A team of Chinese scientists has detected a whopping 80 percent of microplastics in blood clots that can cause strokes, heart attacks, and deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Microplastics (any type of plastic less than 5 mm in length) have long been known as a major environmental and health concern around the world.

The new study, published in the journal eBioMedicine, showed that samples of blood clots were found in cerebral arteries in the brain, coronary arteries in the heart, and deep veins in the legs of 30 patients.

“Microplastics were found in 80 percent of blood clots recovered from blood vessels after a heart attack, stroke, or deep vein thrombosis. This is really bad news. Plastics are everywhere in modern life,” says Johns. Tatiana Prowell, associate professor of oncology at Hopkins University, said in a post on X.com.

This study highlighted the need to accurately investigate the effects of microplastics on human health. It showed that the presence of microplastics can increase the severity of heart attacks, strokes, and deep vein thrombosis.

Researchers from the First Affiliated Hospital of Shantou University said, “Our findings demonstrate that microplastics of varying concentrations, polymer types, and physical properties are present in human blood clots (thrombus), and that the level of microplastics may vary. “This suggests that higher levels may be associated with disease severity.” Medical universities in China.
