The 24-year-old heart disease survivor will be the keynote speaker at the Story County Go Red for Women dinner on Thursday, April 18th.

Local residents have banded together in red to raise awareness of the disease, which kills one in three women.

The annual fundraiser highlights the need for more research and education about the nation’s biggest killer of women.

“Every day in my practice, I see women who are at high risk for heart disease and stroke,” said Amy, co-chair of Story County Go Red for Women and a dentist at Ames Cosmetic and Family Dentistry Center. Lockow Nelson said: news release. “In my role as chair of Go Red for Women, I want to raise awareness and save women in our community.”

Thursday’s dinner will be held at the Gateway Hotel and Conference Center in Ames. There will be a silent auction and fashion show hosted by Iowa State University students.

Speakers include survivor Peyton Shaw, BCLUW teacher

KCCI journalist Alyssa Gomez will host Thursday.

Guests will also enjoy a keynote address by Dr. Patricia Quinlisk and a personal story by heart disease survivor Peyton Shaw.

Quinlisk is the state epidemiologist emeritus for the state of Iowa and currently the medical director of the Keys to Dementia Prevention program. She served as the state’s medical director and epidemiologist for 24 years. Quinlisk explains how dementia affects women and how brain health and heart health are linked.

Shaw is a middle school art teacher in the BCLUW School District and this year’s featured survivor. She survived a pulmonary embolism (a disease in which blood clots travel to the lungs) in March 2023.

The embolism caused the 24-year-old man’s heart to stop twice and required 30 minutes of cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Despite being given a 50 percent chance of survival, Shaw made a remarkable recovery.

American Heart Association celebrates 100th anniversary

The “Go Red for Women” movement is the signature campaign of the American Heart Association, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary.

“Go Red for Women is about more than just wearing red. It’s about raising awareness about heart health and empowering women and all individuals to live healthier lives,” says Story. Lisa Seversike, co-chair of Counties Go Red for Women and branch manager of Global State Mortgage in Ames, said in a news release. . “Together, we can create a community of women who are smart at heart and ready to take action.”

Tickets for the dinner can be purchased at www.heart.org/StoryCoGoRed. On-site registration begins Thursday at 5pm at the Gateway Hotel & Conference Center.The program begins at 6:15 p.m.
