Researchers at Karolinska Institutet’s Institute of Environmental Medicine found that low influence and opportunities for development at work (job control), as well as heavy physical workload, are contributing factors to all-cause and heart disease deaths. found that this is an important explanatory factor for educational disparities in rates.

Educational disparities in mortality are well known, but the mechanisms are not fully understood. This study was able to account for a variety of factors among young people that may explain their educational and occupational choices and their subsequent health outcomes.

Lead author Melody Almuros, a research fellow at the Institute of Environmental Medicine, said: “Even after accounting for a variety of socio-demographic, behavioral and health-related factors, poor working conditions cannot explain educational disparities in mortality rates. was important.”

The study was based on a cohort of 46,565 men who were drafted into the Swedish military in 1969-1970 at around the age of 18. These people were followed over time for all-cause and heart disease mortality. The researchers used regression models to estimate educational differences in mortality and the explanatory role of various factors. Changes in the hazard ratio (HR) after adjusting for physical workload and job control around age 55 highlighted the influence of these working conditions.

“These results show that by increasing control over work and reducing the amount of physical work required, we have the potential to reduce deaths and improve educational inequalities,” says Melody Almuros.
