Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. (South Korea) – Heart disease is the leading cause of death, according to the American Heart Association, and state legislatures are working to prevent heart disease in emergencies.

When a student-athlete has a cardiac emergency on the field or court, seconds can mean the difference between life and death.

In those few seconds, Sen. Paul Rosino wants all public schools to come up with a plan.

“We were all watching live TV. We’ve seen people die on soccer fields, and without this kind of treatment we wouldn’t be here today,” said Sen. Rozino. the lawmaker said.

Many football fans witnessed Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin’s heart stop on the field during an NFL game.

But thankfully, Bills trainer and OSU graduate Denny Kellington was also on the field.

“I was the person who performed CPR on Damar Hamlin on January 2, 2023,” Kellington confirmed.

Plans like Mr. Kellington and his team’s are what Sen. Rosino is asking schools to emulate in SB1921.

“What schools have to do is they have to have some sort of action plan in place that includes an AED to keep students safe in the event of a heart attack,” he said.

This bill would require public schools to develop a response plan for sudden cardiac emergencies. This includes teams at each school facility, regular training, coordination with local emergency medical service providers, and AED provisioning.

School nurses, coaches, and teachers must also complete cardiac arrest training.

Sen. Rosino said he has not received any pushback from Congress for his bill.
