Thousands join Goldie’s Run to help children with heart disease
The streets near Huntington Bank Stadium were crowded Sunday morning as thousands of people ran for the cause.
Goldie’s Run in Minneapolis raises funds for the U of M Masonic Children’s Hospital, which promotes groundbreaking cardiovascular research and helps patients in Minnesota and beyond.
Sunday’s event consisted of a 5K run and walk, a 10 mile run, and a kids run divided by age group.
KSTP’s Paul Folger and Leah McLean were also on hand to help kick off the fundraiser.
According to the race director, about 7,100 people attended last year, and this year that number has increased even further.
“We have 8,000 runners. It’s a little windy, but we’re hoping the rain stops,” said Mike Coughlin, Goldie’s Run race director.
One of the runners, Lisa King, along with a group of about 20 people who had lost limbs, learned to run again through a nonprofit organization called Wiggle Your Toes. Goldie’s runs are part of an event where she trains to improve her athletic performance.
“This is very challenging. I have been an amputee for 31 years and had not had the chance to run again since my accident until I discovered Wiggle Your Toes a few years ago and attended their events and mobility clinics. . Just last year, we had Running Blades,” King said.
