We are delighted to announce the appointment of Professor David Atwell as Director of the Center for Groundbreaking New Research. BHF-UK DRI Vascular Dementia Research Center.
Meet Professor David Atwell
With a distinguished career spanning several decades and a wealth of expertise in neuroscience and physiology, Professor Atwell brings unparalleled leadership and vision to this vital role. Professor David Atwell, a prominent figure in the field of neuroscience, completed his first degree in physics at the University of Oxford, followed by a PhD focusing on the electrophysiology of nerve and muscle cells.
After furthering his research in Berkeley, California, he joined the Department of Physiology at University College London, where he currently serves as the Jodrell Professor of Physiology.
Professor Atwell’s diverse research portfolio includes research into glial cells, glutamate transporters, stroke, myelination, and cerebral blood flow regulation.
future vision
Professor Attwell’s appointment marks an exciting milestone in the creation of the new £9 million centre. His vision is clear. The aim is to elucidate the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying vascular dementia and develop targeted therapeutic interventions.
The center aims to revolutionize the understanding and treatment of vascular dementia by focusing on the often underestimated role of blood vessels in the development of dementia.
Professor David Atwell said: “The influence of cerebrovascular systems has been significantly underestimated in understanding the causes of dementia.
“I am delighted to have been involved in the establishment of a center funded by both Dementia UK and the British Heart Foundation, which will help us understand how vascular dysfunction leads to dementia and The aim is to provide unique therapeutic targets.”
unique partnership
Professor Brian Williams, Chief Scientific and Medical Officer of the Center, said: He is an outstanding scientist whose extensive experience, ambitious vision, and commitment to people suffering from vascular dementia will develop more effective science-driven treatments for this devastating condition. It will help you.
“Professor Atwell’s leadership will be key to establishing the Center as a world-class research center and laying the foundations for a new era of vascular dementia research. We need generous supporters to pave the way for research into “an effective treatment for vascular dementia.” ”
Professor Siddharthan Chandran, Director of the UK Dementia Research Institute, said: “The appointment of Professor David Atwell as Director of the Center is testament to his outstanding expertise and dedication to advancing dementia research. ” he said.
“I am confident that under his leadership, the new center will make great strides toward discovering new insights and treatments for people living with or at risk for vascular dementia.”
next step
Professor Atwell will be based at UCL and will establish virtual centers across DRI host universities in the UK. Recruitment for the new Group Leader position will begin in the coming months.
