Stress from external factors such as unemployment or not having a college degree increases the likelihood of heart disease in Asian Americans, reports the American Heart Association Journal.
According to the University of Washington, the study found that due to these social factors, Asians were 14% more likely to have high blood pressure, 17% more likely to have unhealthy sleep, and 24% more likely to have type 2 diabetes. It has been revealed that
“Despite the recognition that Asian Americans are less affected by social determinants of health than other races and ethnicities, our findings demonstrate that unfavorable social factors are more prevalent in the Asian American group. “We show that this is associated with a higher prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors in the United States,” said lead author Dr. Johnson. Eugene Yang of the University of Washington School of Medicine;
Risk factors range from economic instability, negative social interactions, psychological stress, food insecurity, lack of education, and unequal access to health care.
The study surveyed about 6,400 Asians, including roughly equal numbers of Filipinos, Asian Indians, and Chinese.
According to News Medical, researchers found that:
- Chinese people are 45% more likely to have type 2 diabetes
- Filipinos are 24% more likely to have type 2 diabetes.
- Filipinos are 28% more likely to have high blood pressure
- Asian Indians are 20% more likely to not get enough sleep
- Chinese people are 56% more likely to be exposed to nicotine
- Filipinos are 50% more likely to be exposed to nicotine
The study also found that four out of seven Filipinos suffer from lack of sleep, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and obesity.
Dr. Yang spoke in more detail about his research with UW Medicine. He said South Asians are at higher risk for cardiovascular disease than East Asians.
In fact, data extracted from death certificates shows that Asian Indian women and men have the highest rate of death from ischemic heart disease within their age group compared to other Asian subgroups. I understand.
