A new study has found that young women who drink just more than one glass of wine a day significantly increase their risk of developing heart disease.

Scientists in California studied the drinking habits of 430,000 adults over a four-year period.

During that time, 3,108 people developed heart disease, which can cause symptoms such as heart attack, angina and stroke.

Studies have shown that the more alcohol you drink, the more likely you are to be diagnosed with heart disease, with women being more affected. Scientists involved in the study believe this is because alcohol increases blood pressure and causes inflammation, even in young adults.

Participants were divided into three groups based on alcohol intake. The minimum was 1-2 drinks a week. Moderate was defined as 3 to 14 drinks per week for men and 3 to 7 drinks per week for women. Heavy drinking was defined as 15 or more drinks per week for men and 8 or more drinks per week for women.

Even after accounting for age, women who drank more alcohol had a 45% higher risk of heart disease than women who drank less. On the other hand, binge eating also had a very serious effect. Women who binge drink and eat were 68% more likely to develop heart disease.

Dr. Jamal Rana, chief cardiologist and lead author of the study, said: People who consume large amounts of alcohol or binge drinkers are at risk for coronary heart disease.

“For women, we see a consistently higher risk even in the absence of binge drinking. We typically see higher risk for heart disease in older women, so we see this in women in this younger age group. I didn’t expect such a result. It was definitely a surprise.”

This news may seem worrying to some people. British women top the world’s biggest list of female binge drinkers, with 26% of British women binge drinking (defined as six or more drinks in one session) at least once, according to a report by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. ) was found to be. Month.

The NHS recommends that you consume no more than 14 units of alcohol per week, spread over three or more days.
