The 27-year-old has faced backlash from KSI, Eddie Hearn, Carl Froch and fans for signing on to fight a faded legend who hasn’t had a real boxing match in almost 20 years.

In an article for The Conversation, Stephen Hughes, senior lecturer in medicine at Anglia Ruskin University, highlighted the potentially fatal injury Tyson could inflict on Paul.

Because he is old and a recovering alcoholic, “Iron Mike” is at risk of suffering a subdural hematoma, where a vein in the brain ruptures.

“In older people, brain volume tends to decrease,” Hughes explains. “This makes the bridging veins longer and more susceptible to rupture.

“Bleeding from these torn veins causes blood to collect and compress the brain. This can cause confusion, loss of consciousness, neurological damage, and even death.”

“Alcoholism is known to accelerate brain atrophy, and Tyson appears to have this as a past risk factor.”

The 57-year-old is also at high risk for several heart conditions that can be caused by overtraining for his comeback fight.

Hughes added: ‘In middle age, the likelihood of cardiac events such as arrhythmia (arrhythmia), angina (reduced blood flow to the heart muscle) and myocardial infarction (heart attack) increases.

“Staying healthy protects against cardiovascular disease, and Tyson’s exercise habits will benefit him greatly. But there’s always the temptation to overdo it in the gym.

“Excessive exercise can cause cardiac fibrosis (scarring of the heart muscle), which over time can lead to heart failure and even sudden death.

Boxing legend posts new training footage, fans predict Jake Paul will cancel upcoming fight with Mike Tyson

“Coronary atherosclerosis (narrowing of the heart’s arteries) is common in middle-aged people, even in apparently healthy people. However, it can cause sudden death during exercise.

“Regular exercise reduces this risk, but a cocaine habit greatly increases the risk. Tyson is known to have used the drug in the past.”

Despite the risks, Tyson appears intent on going ahead with the fight against Paul, convincing even a few people that Tyson can pull off an all-around upset.

Tyron Woodley, who was famously KO’d by Paul, and UFC legend Chuck Liddell are two high-profile fighters who are helping Tyson turn back the years when he returns to the ring this summer.

Most people, like Dr. Hughes, are concerned about his health.
