HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Heart attack and cardiac arrest are often linked in the public’s mind, with people using them interchangeably to describe heart conditions.

Dr. Jason Mader, a local interventional cardiologist, says heart attacks and cardiac arrest are not two different things.

“A heart attack can lead to cardiac arrest, but not all heart attacks do so. So a heart attack is simply a blockage that causes tissue death in the muscle that lasts for a long time. “And if that area of tissue doesn’t heal, potentially someone could go into cardiac arrest from that,” Mader said.

According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, cardiac arrest occurs when the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops pumping. When this happens, blood flow to the brain and other vital organs stops. Cardiac arrest is caused by certain types of arrhythmias that prevent the heart from pumping blood.

Dr. Marder says cardiac arrest can occur suddenly.

“There are other reasons why people go into cardiac arrest, as we’ve seen at some sporting events. There have also been some instances where people just collapse, but those are all completely separate from heart attacks. . They may be congenital, something you’re born with, or due to another cause, like a bad virus,” Mader said.

Symptoms before cardiac arrest include:

– Uncomfortable feeling of pressure on the chest

– shortness of breath

– Weaknesses

– Heart beats fast, pounding or pounding

Mader says it’s best to see a doctor if you have any symptoms that bother you, and it’s important to get tested if your symptoms suddenly appear.

“Let’s say you suddenly have symptoms. Let’s say you feel a pain that feels like it’s going to explode in your chest. Don’t wait, wait for your symptoms to get better. Go to the emergency room and get diagnosed. Heart. “As we often say in intervention medicine, time is of the essence, and the faster we can solve something, the better we can treat people,” Marder said.
