HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — February is Heart Health Month, and all this week we’ll be talking about ways to reduce your risk of heart disease.
Experts say there’s a link between poor oral health and increased risk of heart disease, so you can start by scheduling your next dentist appointment.
UT Health’s Dr. Thomas Servos says it’s important to note that this is more than just brushing and flossing your teeth.

“People say they use mouthwash to keep their breath fresh, and it’s good to have mouthwash on hand because it contains antibacterial agents that kill the bacteria that cause bad breath. ”
Dr. Serbos explains how there is a lot of bacteria in our mouths, and if oral infections such as cavities are not properly treated and cleaned, they can enter the bloodstream and reach the heart. “You can buy a tongue scraper, which you can do a few times and then throw away, but be sure to remove any bacteria from your tongue. It’s probably the home of the most bacteria in your mouth.”
