Luton Town captain Tom Lockyer, who suffered cardiac arrest during a Premier League match in December, has called on people to learn CPR this Heart Month.
The 29-year-old collapsed during a Premier League game against Bournemouth on December 16 last year, and bystanders and club medics rushed to perform CPR and early defibrillation.
The Welsh man said those quick actions saved his life and now he is supporting our campaign to encourage people to learn CPR and raise money for life-saving research this Heart Month. He said that
At least five people suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the UK every 90 minutes, which is the length of a football match. This equates to more than 30,000 cases per year. Sadly, fewer than 1 in 10 people survive. This is often due to people around you not having the confidence to perform CPR or use a defibrillator.
Tom, who is about to become a father for the first time, said if everyone affected by his story could learn CPR, more people would be more likely to be saved. We estimate that as many as 23 million people have never learned these life-saving skills.
“I woke up from nothing”
“I am an example of the power of CPR and how it saves lives. I am so grateful for the people who saved my life and to be able to spend special moments with my family like my soon-to-be-born baby. ” he said.
The Hatters defender recalled memories of Dec. 16. Tom said: “I remember jogging to the halfway line that day in December and feeling light-headed. Then I woke up on the empty floor and couldn’t move or speak.
“Eventually, I was able to move and speak again. If it weren’t for the people who responded quickly by performing CPR and using a defibrillator. I wouldn’t be here right now waiting for my daughter to come into the world.”
Tom was hospitalized for five days and was fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD).
“I have a lot to be thankful for. My health is the most important thing and I’m really looking forward to the future. If I have the chance to return to playing, I would love to do it,” he added.
A soccer player has appealed to the public to learn CPR to save lives in the ultimate medical emergency.
“This Heart Month, I challenge everyone to learn CPR using BHF’s RevivR training tool,” he said.
“In just 15 minutes, you can learn how to potentially save a life.” With at least five people in the UK having an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest every 90 minutes, learning life-saving cardiopulmonary resuscitation can help you save your life in an emergency. Sometimes you can intervene with confidence.”

Dr Charmaine Griffiths, Chief Executive Officer of the Company, said: “Late last year, thousands of people across the country witnessed Tom collapse on the pitch and hoped he would recover. Thanks to quick CPR and defibrillation, Tom’s life was saved. It’s hard to believe, but it’s even more heartbreaking to think that Tom will be here giving birth to a baby girl.
“But not everyone is equally lucky. That’s why we encourage everyone to learn CPR to improve survival rates and save more lives.” I We have a duty to Tom and future generations to ensure that everyone has the skills to save lives.
“We are extremely grateful to Tom for using his platform to encourage the public to learn CPR while supporting the British Heart Foundation this Heart Month.”
